does anyone know if patches from my Korg X3 workstation are compatible with the Triton Extreme?

I bought my X3 new back in 1994. I was 16 and it was my first synth. I have a tonne of patches on floppy (also backed on my HD) full of .SNG and .PCG files and I'd be interested to know if they'll work on a Triton.

Short answer: NO
Long answer: Yes if you can find very similar waveforms and start copying parameters

I had a similar challenge with sequences made on my 01/Wfd (13 years of composition on that synth).
Ended up slaving my Triton to the 01W and recording my songs into the Triton's sequencer.
Repeated this process a few years later between the Triton and my Oasys.

If you do this there are things to consider, which you'll discover as you go along, but...

Make sure any tracks you have set to Internal on your X3 are reset to either External or Both - otherwise your Triton won't be able to record those tracks (because they wont be sent to it from your X3).

Make sure your Triton is in Multi REC mode - otherwise you'll be able to only record one track at a time (instead of all 16).

Make sure the MIDI channels match the tracks.
If you haven't changed them on your X3 then they will still go in sequence one to sixteen (both tracks and channels) - but if you have changed the MIDI channel order - for instance have track 10 set to MIDI channel 8 for some reason - then you need to duplicate this on your Triton to avoid an unexpected surprise.

I have found it's easiest just to reset (if necessary) all the tracks to their default (MIDI channel numbers match the tracks) for the transfer to Triton and then revert them as necessary once they're recorded into the T-Rex's sequencer.

Before I do anything though, I listen to each track (on my 01W) and make a notation (on paper) of what is on it (lead, sax, bass, etc) and what measures the data occupies.
This takes time (you bet) but it makes it easy to see if everything went as planned.
Additionally, if you are planning on re-orchestrating any of your parts using your Triton your will know what the original parts were.
As soon as I get the tacks transfered - I check them and then name them (something we couldn't do on our X & 0 synths).

Hope this helps a little - and I feel you pain regarding transferring your programs. You might sample some of your favorite sounds - but, if I ended up hanging on to my 01W- which I definitely do not regret.

Peace,
David -

The good thing about the X3 is that it has a floppy drive and saves in PC format. It also will save in .mid (type 0 & 1) on a floppy.

You might be able to midi dump your sequences in standard midi files right into the Triton. This didn't work too well for me, but it might be worth a try. Or, if you can find a USB floppy drive the Triton will recognize (and work with) you can just re-save your sequences in SMF format on your X3 and then load them from the floppy. My 01/Wfd has a floppy drive also, but I could never find a USB floppy the Triton would play nice with. Zip drives, no problem, CF cards, USB thumb drives, sure, but floppies, nope. Wonder if anyone else out there has tried anything like this?

i'd recommend backing the floppies on your PC and using the midi data any way you please.
The sequences on my X3 have all been transferred to my PC sequencers.

Its unfortunate that i cannot use the vast amount of patches I have from the 01, 03W, M1 and X3 on the Triton. I have an awesome bank of Korg issued Organ patches on floppy that I'd love to hear on the Triton.

The structure of the programs in the X3 is vastly different from the Triton series. I've even had a very hard time recreating AI2 programs on the Triton even without the samples. The strings are impossible to recreate unless you have the sampled data from the AI2 synths, and most of my old sequences lost a lot of their good sound because of the Triton's overly bright-sounding programs. I upgraded from an N364 to a Triton Extreme, I actually find I had to load sequences in Sonar and really reformat each track. For example, I'd have to scale velocities, change octave transpositions, and in some cases, re-sequence tracks.

The only real compatibility Korg seems to have put in is putting the 01/W drum kits (think they are the same on the X3) in the Trinity and Triton workstations. There is no patch on the Triton for this, you have to make a new patch and select the 01/W Total Kit and Producer Kit drum kits.

The jump from the Triton Extreme to the M3 was WAY easier at least... programs react more similarly. Good luck in your project there, it's not an easy one!

I have an X3 owned new from 1995 and Id like to do something similar to this aswell. Before I bought my triton extreme I asked the salesman whether patches could be loaded onto tex from the x3, which he replied no obviously.
I recently bought an 03r/w and a data card with the intention of getting my favourite combi's and programs onto the o3r/w and then getting shot of the X3 as I dont need it any more.
Its a real shame that there are not data cards that will just plug into the triton and then just be able to play your favourite A12 sounds from the 90's
The other idea was what about the m1/wavestation legacy digital VST, is there any way of getting X3 patches (or 01 series) off the x3 on to a laptop and then into the software version for use? (that would be handy)

Failing that the only other way is to sample your favourite sounds (if theres not too many of them) into something like kontakt or the Tex, which I may end up having to do anyway with other synth gear I dont use as much anymore.
