BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2022 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — Palm Beach County Tax Collector Anne Gannon, who is 74 years old, seems to be having a problem either with staffing, management, or both. We say "seems to" because our request for comment from her Communications Director has gone unanswered for six hours — so we don't know what's really happening inside the office that so many in Palm Beach County rely on.
But here's what we do know: BocaNewsNow.com has received scores of calls and other communication from Palm Beach County residents asking why Gannon's offices are operating at a snail's pace. The calls come in a few a day — it's been happening for weeks.
"It doesn't make sense," said one very angry taxpayer trying to deal with a license issue. "She is still enacting COVID protocols even though COVID requirements should have gone away months ago."
"I just moved here, said another. "I have to go to the office, what I need can't be done online, but they can't see me for seven weeks."
A visit to the Palm Beach County Tax Collector's website substantiates the complaints. "All of our offices require staff and clients to maintain social distancing of at least 6 feet," writes Gannon on her website. "We make every effort to accommodate you at your scheduled appointment time. Due to the variances in processing times for transactions, your wait time may be extended to 30-45 minutes or more beyond your appointment time."
A look at the scheduling system for the Delray Beach branch shows the first available appointment for auto-tag or driver's license work is June 8th — nearly two months away. There are no dates available in Belle Glade, West Palm Beach, Westlake, or Palm Beach Gardens. Other services, like title transfer or "business transfer receipt" show no availability at any of her offices.
BocaNewsNow.com, in an effort to determine how bad the situation truly is, also attempted to reach out as a consumer. The telephone hold time was more than an hour. And when we sent an old license plate — via USPS priority mail with tracking — we learned that the plate was delivered to Gannon's headquarters in West Palm Beach on time. But when we emailed the customer service email address to find out the status, we were told there was no record of it being received. We were asked for the tracking number but heard nothing back. That was two weeks ago.
We last reported on Anne Gannon back in 2018 when we published an open letter, telling her that her office is a disaster. She was not happy. Turns out, four years later, it still is. Gannon took office in 2006. Her office is up for election in 2024.
